What Is Linocut Printmaking?

First, the artist sketches a design directly onto a flat piece of linoleum (or a soft rubber block). The design is then carefully carved using sharp gouging tools, cutting away the areas that should not appear in the final print. The raised, uncarved portions are what hold the ink.

Once the carving is complete, ink is rolled or pressed onto the surface of the block. The block is then pressed firmly onto paper so when it's lifted, the design is transferred. The result is a crisp, bold impression with a slightly organic, textured quality that you simply can't replicate digitally.

Because each impression is made by hand, natural variations in ink coverage, pressure, and placement mean that every single print is subtly unique.
